The Top Makeup Trends for Fall 2022

The Top Makeup Trends for Fall 2022

In case you haven’t noticed, the weather is slowly getting cooler and this year, we’re choosing not to grieve summer’s bronzed skin and juicy lips. Sweater weather has arrived and it’s brought five spicy new beauty trends that are sure to get you excited to leave those long (sweaty!) days behind.

“These looks are all about bringing warmth to the complexion—without the bronzer,” says Gabriella Boccia, Detox Ambassador and Makeup Artist. Instead, we’re looking to add a sultry effect to any look with a vampy lip, smudgy eyeliner, and a flattering, rust-hued flush. Paired with fresh skin and a hint of the unexpected—hi, pastel-hued eyeshadow—you’ll be boot shopping with a pumpkin spice latte in hand in no time.

Here’s what you need to stay on-trend this season.

Fall Makeup Trend: Simple Skin is In

Balancing the look with a fresh, natural-looking complexion is the key to keeping the season’s moodier palette looking modern. Skip the layers of foundation and instead show off your skin’s natural texture with a lit-from-within glow.

Choose a medium-coverage liquid foundation and apply it using your fingers or a damp makeup sponge. Boccia says to start in the middle of your face, around your nose—where we tend to have the most redness—and gradually blend it outwards.

Need more coverage? Spot-correct with a bit of concealer instead of adding more layers. “Finish by setting with powder if your skin tends to be a bit oily, but don’t overdo it. Fresh skin looks so beautiful when it has a bit of a shine,” adds Boccia.

Fall Makeup Trend: Better with Bold

“Pastels are such a fun trend because it’s a bit unexpected for fall,” says Boccia.

Keep this look in your back pocket if you want a finishing touch when you’re looking to rock a vampy, wine-hued lip and want others to take a double-take. To give your fall makeup look a bit of an edge, use a matte pastel-colored eyeshadow and simply dab the color on with your ring finger. Start in the middle of your eyelid and slowly work towards the crease to blend it out.

To really take it to the next level, use a small eyeshadow brush to layer a complementary hue over top, and blend it all together with a clean, fluffy shadow brush.

Fall Makeup Trend: Power Pouts

A grape-hued lip is an autumnal classic for a reason. It’s simple, sexy, and can kick any look up a notch in sophistication.

For a look that will last from your morning meeting right through to happy hour, you’ll want to keep things precise with the help of a pencil. “Follow your lip line with the pencil and then fill your lips in completely. This will give your lipstick a base and help the color stay put,” says Boccia. Finish by blotting with a tissue for a more lived-in look.

You can choose to wear it as is or for something more saturated you can follow the pencil up with lipstick in a similar shade. Just remember to blot once more. “For an extra crisp line, trace the edges of your lips with a small brush and your usual concealer,” she says.

Fall Makeup Trend: Hazy Gazes

Toss those sharp-as-a-knife liquid liners and embrace the bliss of imperfection this season. Meant to look effortless and (incredibly sultry), the new eyeliner looks are all about soft, blurred-out strokes on your top or bottom lashline or both.

Start with a freshly-sharpened eye pencil in the shade of your choice (traditional, inky shades and bold brights are big this fall!) and run it along your lashes. Next, carefully blend it out for a smudged effect.

“You can use a small brush, your finger, or a cotton swab for a more worn-in line that gives definition, that also has some softness,” says Boccia. Don’t worry about messing it up—this look has no rules.

Fall Makeup Trend: A Rusty Flush

Crisp, rosy cheeks and cooler weather are a perfectly crafted combo that will never go out of style. This year-round, though, we’re pulling inspiration for our flush from those summer days when you’ve had just a little too much sunshine.

Opting for terracotta-tinted shades in either cream or powder-based formulas, swirl the color onto the apples of your cheeks with your fingers or a medium-sized blush brush.

“Don’t be afraid to let it diffuse all the way to your ears and even up to your under-eye area for a full-on flush. You can even sweep it across the bridge of your nose for an extra-realistic, sunkissed look”, says Boccia.
